By brian barth landscape designer. Steep slopes are a daunting place to garden, but it is important to install some form of landscaping to prevent the forces of erosion from having their way. The owners originally specified they wanted the steep hillside next to the deck to have year round good looks from evergreens.
Your land might also slope towards your house, your house being at a low point.
Not all slopes are straight. I have two steep hills in the front of my house that go into an acre pond. Structures, driveways and roads are situated on pads that have been carved out of the landscape (figure 8). Your house may be at a higher elevation with your land sloping down and away from it.
